Defense Spending Compared to Non Defense Spending

The U.S Defense Budget is over half of Discretionary Spending

The War with Iraq cost 4,431 lives; and nearly $2 Trillion Dollars.

U.S Defense spending is more than the next 10 countries combined!

U.S spent $1.3 Trillion in Discretionary Spending in 2019. ($676 Billion went to Defense Spending).

  • In 2019, Dept of Education Budget was cut 12% compared to 2018 budget.

  • Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) budget was cut $953 Million in 2019. 
  •  HRSA is the primary federal agency for improving health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable.

  • Dept of Justice (DOJ)  Proposed Budget in 2021 was less than 5% of Defense Spending. 
  • DOJ overall budget was cut 2.3%
  • State and Local Grants cut 43% in 2021 versus 2020.

Are We Safe When Millions Still Can't Afford Healthcare?

  • Over the past 10 years, 14 hospitals in Missouri have closed. 
  • Over 10% of Missourians do not have health insurance.
  • For 2019, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reported 1,151 people died by suicide in Missouri.

How Fair is Universal Healthcare?

Is it Legal? Safe? Fair?

  • Is it possible to provide universal healthcare in a legal, safe, and fair way for every American? 
  • What if voters demanded smarter policies to make it so?
  • Should we ever give up on saving lives?

Are We Secure When Homelessness And Unemployment Rates Rise?

  • 6,179 people in Missouri go homeless on a single night. (usich.gov)
  • 180,000 Missourians remain unemployed. (data.bls.gov)
  •  813,840 people still have very low food security, including 1 in 7 children in MO. 


Isn't A Smarter Nation A Stronger Nation?

  • Are we secure when U.S. students score lower in reading, math and science than Russia, Hong Kong, China, UK, and Singapore?
  • In 2019, Missouri's 4th graders scored lower in reading and math compared to 2017.
  • 10% of Missouri's children have no internet access at home.

Safety Demands We Increase Pay and Accountability for Law Enforcement Officers.

  • Why are the wages for law enforcement officers so low? 
  • Wouldn't safety improve if we hired and retained our finest officers? 
  • Doesn't justice demand we install common sense limits, and improve use of force policies according to best practices? 
  • Isn't it fair we increase compensation for those who risk their lives to serve and protect our communities?

I do not believe we should defund the Police!  

Integrity Calls Us To Protect Our Environment

  • The United Nation’s “Paris Agreement” calls for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to hold the increase in the global average temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius. 
  • Agriculture is an important component of Missouri’s economy; therefore, our state is particularly vulnerable to extreme precipitation conditions. 
  • Both floods and droughts can result in billions of dollars in losses for MO.  (NOAA - Nat'l Ctr for Env Info)

To Whom Much Is Given, Isn't Much Required?

Can we raise revenue in a legal, safe, and fair way to strengthen America, which includes investing more in Career and Technical Education? 

  • Raising tax rates on ordinary income for the top two tax brackets by only 1 percentage point could raise $114 Billion in revenue from 2021-2030. 
  • (Unmarried/Heads of Households making  over $204,000 per year, and Married Couples filing jointly making over $408,000 per year)

Fairness Requires We Demand More Value From Government Contracts.

  • Is it fair that CEOs reap millions of dollars in bonuses from defense contracts funded by tax payers?
  • Isn't America more safe if we modernize our military with better equipment at a more fair cost?
  • What legal protections are available to negotiate more value before we sign high-dollar Defense contracts?  
  • Fairness is not anti-military. Fairness is anti-greed.
  •  Defense Contract Management Agency manages contracts with an overall total value of $5.2 trillion. ($678 million in contractor payments per business day)
  • How can we invest to promote more justice, safety and fairness for America?
